S.E.M. Construction was involved with the design and completed the selective demolition/abatement and new construction for the former Lucan Public School in the effort to revitalize the Township. The school sat abandoned for many years and at the entrance to the city heading southbound was it was considered a blemish leading you into the quaint heart of Lucan.
There were several issues S.E.M. Construction faced that lead to the final realization of this stunning building – asbestos abatement, aged construction techniques, unsafe building practices and implementing building standards to the current Ontario Building Code. This abandoned school and overgrown site in Lucan posed a risk of crime, plunging property values, and escalating maintenance costs and contributed to overall community decline and disinvestment.
S.E.M. viewed this vacant property as an opportunity for productive reuse. To them this empty facility presented itself as an asset in community stabilization and revitalization. S.E.M. Construction diligently worked with the Township of Lucan Biddulph to cost effectively provide them with the type of Facility that would meet their needs and that the town could be proud to call their Municipal Offices and Library, it is now a focal point to the entrance of the Town. The interior building upgrades and the exterior facade replacement allowed this property to be renewed and not left abandoned in lieu of new construction elsewhere.
The efforts of all involved are demonstrated everyday with the proud employees, increased number of library patrons and overall aesthetics of the building which is proudly viewed right along Main Street.
Repurpose of the 14,000 sq. ft. old Lucan Public School into the new township offices and library. The project included complete designated substance abatement, complete interior demolition, construction of 7,000 sq. ft. township offices, council chambers, vault, and a 7,000 sq. ft. public library.
