The Imaging Pathogens for Knowledge Translation Facility (ImPaKT) at Western University is Canada’s only CL2+/CL3 containment lab with real-time imaging capabilities. The multi-modality imaging suite allows researchers to track infectious agents while simultaneously monitoring immune responses.
S.E.M. Construction completed the full interior fit up for the ImPaKT Facility. This unique and complex project required stringent regulations, innovative construction techniques, and sensitive materials to ensure that the highest level of containment was achieved. Extensive F.A.T. testing was required prior to equipment being delivered to the site. Commissioning, leak testing and quality control were integral components to the successful completion of this project.
Part of this contract involved hoisting an air handling unit (AHU) from the ground to the 6th floor. Extensive coordination was needed to have an opening made in the side of the building to allow for the installation of this unit.
This lab contains both a CL2+ Lab as well as a CL3 lab with a swing space. The space includes three Procedure Rooms, two Imaging Rooms (containing the Photon Microscope and MRI), two Autoclaves complete with clean and dirty sides, a shower in / shower out area with designated clean and dirty sides, an AHU, and a large CL2+ lab area with associated functions.
This containment lab is designed and built to prevent the exposure of laboratory workers, other persons, and the environment to biological agents in use. It is also designed as a barrier for security that prevents all but those who are fully trained and competent to enter unless fully supervised.
